JERRY MORADA

Jerry Morada was born in Pakil, a quiet, laid-back, conservative town in Laguna where he resides at present. A product of the University of the Philippines College of Fine Arts, Morada began his career working as artist for Probe Productions, Inc., producer of the award-winning “Probe Team”.

Equally adept in the art of woodcarving, a tradition practiced in the adjoining town of Paete, Laguna, Morada diversified went into ice carving, a personal hobby which has given him recognition from his peers. He has, in addition, won a couple of first prizes, in the Bureau of Internal Revenue Poster Making Contest, in 1998, and in the Well Painting Competition, in 1999.

Morada has worked on such standard subjects as genre and portraiture, like many of his fellow artists in the Guevarra Group. His portraits of women are particularly riveting, as the artist captures his subjects in turn-of-the-century clothes and accessories, not to mention the iconic gestures and objects surrounding the main figure.

In his recent work, Morada has finally evolved, focusing on the character of the woman and veering away from the sheer physical appeal or romantic aura that once dominated his portraits. In their place have emerged more dynamic, three-dimensional figures in powerfully conjured mise-en-scene. The women, often shown in pairs, and in contrasting or diverging moods and appearances --- one fully dressed in baro’t saya, with the ubiquitous scapular dangling from her neck and the other totally nude --- are perpetually thrust unto a space of constantly changing scenario.

Morada has always striven to fuse elements of abstraction and figuration in an unpredictable and intriguing configuration of texture, color and composition. It is an evolution that clearly demonstrates the giant strides Morada’s art has taken.
