MARIO PARIAL

Mario Parial studied at the University of Santo Tomas College of Fine Arts, major in advertising, where he graduated in 1969. But four years prior to graduation, at 21, he mounted his first solo show, a remarkable feat for a young man still in college. He was later invited to teach printmaking and painting in his alma mater.

In prints, Parial’s early subjects were of folk genre, largely influenced by his mentors Vicente Manansala, Carlos “Botong” Francisco, and Antonio Austria. His favored subjects today are the mother and child figure, farmers, vendors, and mythical subjects and other well-loved Filipino icons.

In painting, Parial developed a strong folk quality, characterized by vivid hues and design, often set in the colorful ambience of festivals and fiestas. His oeuvre reflects a pervasive sense of organic life, including plants, flowers and the entire vegetation. He has also done female nudes, folk and mythological characters, where the woman, in her various guises and roles, occupies the central figure.

Parial won first prize for “Flight in the Sun” in the 1966 Art Association of the Philippines competition. Among his other awards are first prize, “The World Has Many Faces,” 1966; honorable mention, “The Fire Is Over,” 1965; certificate of merit, “Once Upon A Construction,” 1966; certifIcate of merit, “Night Flight,” 1966; and certificate of merit, “Hour After Hour,” 1967.

Also in 1967, he received the Benavides Award for Outstanding Performance to University Prestige from the University of Santo Tomas. In 1972, he was named one of the Thirteen Artists Awardees of the Cultural Center of the Philippines. In 1978, he was a recipient of the Outstanding Thomasian Award, also from UST. He also had a brief stint teaching at the College of Fine Arts in the University of the Philippines.
