Singapore scene by Rubio and Tresreyes

Inspired by their recent trip to Singapore, Dominic Rubio and Edwin Tresreyes have infused the island’s charm into their canvases. Their series will be inaugurated on July 20 in Galerie Joaquin-Singapore.

The show “Urban Dwellings” is a visual treat from two artists enamored by the energy and history of this tiny country. Also included in the exhibits are works by National artist Arturo Luz and upcoming artist Jovan Benito.

Rubio’s signature colonial figures tower over the townscape and go about their own business: women strolling in the streets with faces of contentment; men walking while in the middle of a discussion; a man balancing goods, perhaps treats for sale.

Rubio paints a town, captured in a moment when the inhabitants seem to grasp the casual elegance of enjoying and savoring life. Rubio’s rich and saturated hues bring a glow to the Malay skin, lifting the figures to the ochre sky.

Tresreyes’ canvases are populated with blocks of vibrant colors. Bright reds and cools blues dance to their own rhythmic patterns. Buildings and houses seem to contain chattering and excited folks in happy reunion with friends and family.
