TALES OF TALES BEYOND THE SURFACE
A one-man show by Marcel Antonio
As they always have been throughout his career, Marcel Antonio’s new works are rich with references drawn from a vast sphere of knowledge, and layered with insights culled from a life of deep introspection - insights on themes as large as art, beauty, truth, and humanity, and as personal as his own growth as an artist and his relationship with the world.
Antonio became one of the local art scene’s brightest stars shortly beginning his professional career before turning 20, and while still a student as the University of the Philippines’ College of Fine Arts. Two decades hence, he continues to be regarded as one the Philippines’ most cerebral artists.
Now in his 40s, with a mind’s eye that is keener than ever, and a hand with its own deliberate style, Antonio’s paintings refuse to define the world in any absolute terms and tell tales that promise more beyond the surface with admirable sophistication. They reveal a curious intellect, a great sense of daring, a taste for story and mystery and even magic, and a sharp instinct for the motivations of his characters.
Although each painting stimulates the mind and inspires a narrative, one must remember that because Antonio’s paintings are never really what they seem, the well of possibilities is a bottomless pit.
